Default Border thoughts

I'm making a quilt for my brother with lots of dark fabrics and beige tones for the lights. I want to make the jelly roll race 2 pattern (with the little squares) and making my own jelly roll because its impossible to find non girly fabrics. So I'm using browns, blues, greens, greys and a couple of blacks. Yes, pretty dark overall except for the beige tones.

My question is what color should I use for the border and little squares? One of the brown fabrics has a touch of burnt orange in it as leaves, would it be too bold to use that? It's a pretty strong color when most of the rest is neutral. I also thought maybe a lighter blue. But would you do a light border with mostly darks? I usually do it the other way around so I can't picture it. Please help!

You can probably find a more subdued orange if you think the one in the print is too bright. Think that would look wonderful. Also, how about a spring or sage green? I think a light border on a dark quilt looks great! You can always double border a narrow dark or light border then a wider border of the contrasting value. Please post a picture when you are done. Sometimes it's hard to find 'guy' quilt patterns & color combos!

How about a reverse value filmstrip border? Usually it is dark strips with little light squares but you could do beige strips with assorted dark squares.

You could try a gold or orange tone with them. It's hard to tell without seeing it.

I think the light blue sounds pretty, or maybe a light gray. For the border, I think I'd go with a darker fabric on the outside with the light blue or light gray small inner border.

I just saw Jenny D on Fons & Porter with Mary Fons doing jelly roll 2. She talked about one done in batiks with black squares and how the contrast looked so great. Sounds like your choice of a shade of orange might be just the thing- if you feel it would appeal to your brother.
