Default HELP! Singer 201-2 Light

Received a Singer 201-2, from a friend and the light stays on, unless you unplug it. Ordered a new light switch and installed it, still the same way. connected power wire to#1 and #3, Control to #1 and 2, motor to#2 and #3 and light to #1 an #3.

Why won't it work?

Thanks for any help

Somewhere in the system the switch has been bypassed. From the wiring block you should have one wire to the switch, then to the light, and the other wire from the wiring block to the light.

Joe, could you explain what you are calling the wiring block? How many wires are coming from the wiring block?

Picture would really be nice....I'm not to hip on wiring. Thanks for the info.

The wiring block is the block at the front of the machine where the cord plugs into. (Right side, directly beneath the hand wheel actually.) On the back side of the block is where the motor and light wires are attached.
There are two set ups. One for the cabinet where the controller is also wired to the back of the wiring block, and the other where the controller wire is integral with the power cord.

Here is a "generic" wiring diagram of how it should be wired for a portable. To alter this diagram for a cabinet model move the foot controller wires to the same position on back side of the left wiring block.

Here is a couple pics showing where the wiring block is on a 201 and what the back side looks like:

Just to the right of the white light switch is a seam, the object to the right of that is the wiring block. In this pic the power cord is plugged into the wiring block.

Depending on weather your machine is a portable or a cabinet machine you'll have either 4 wires (portable) or 6 wires (cabinet model) attached at these points.
Portable will have 2 motor wires and 2 light wires like the diagram above / below.
Cabinet will have 2 motor wires, 2 light wires, and the two controller wires.

Hope this helps. If not feel free to PM me your email addy and I can send some other drawings not allowed here.
