Hi all,
I am hoping you can help me. I just received a Betsy Ross that was supposed to be in Excellent Condition! It looks great, but doesn't move a smidge. It almost feels like it is locked. Any hints/tips to try and "un-freeze" this lovely little sewing machine?

Photos? Condition, cost, age. Excellent to me means should be in well maintained working order and clean. I'm not one to tell you what to do since I just sew and maintain my own 401 and 2662. Those members on the QB will be more qualified to help and suggest but I know it would help to have multiple photos. Anxious to see this 'lovely little sewing machine"

I'm not familiar with these - are they chainstitch or does it have a bobbin? If it has a bobbin, take out the bobbin case and check around and behind that area for thread while you're oiling. Sometimes there's a hidden thread jam that can make a machine feel locked up.

Does it look rusty? If it's not rusty, it might be old oil/grease gunking up the works - someone may have used the wrong type of lube and it could have hardened. Fresh oil will help dissolve the old stuff; or you can use some kerosene to cut through it.

They are a chain stitch machine. I have a manual and electric Betsy Ross in my collection. I don't sew on them but i do collect. I have a photo album on my profile with my little machines. VERY fun to collect, hope you get it moving!

Hi,

There's a Betsy Ross Toy machine and an "Adult" machine made by National and perhaps others. The toy would be the chainstitch model. Need pics or additional "clues"

Time outs are good. I oiled and worked nearly 2 weeks on my sisters kenmore she found. Sewed a great straight stitch but could not get the cam "arm?" to move. Stuck it in the closet till I got time to deal with it again. A few months later, got it out for a lark and it works great! Guess it just needed to set a spell, over oiled.
