Default Trouble with directions.

I'm a newbie here and was admiring this quilt a member mentioned she had done in three hours (Although it will likely take me three weeks! Or more. ) and when I got to the directions I was stumped...

As to block size, the coloured portion is 6.5x10.5" with two 2.5" wide solids on each side, making a 10.5" block.
It may seem obvious but I'm not understanding how those numbers add up. Can someone explain?

Here is the quilt. http://www.quiltingboard.com/attachm...atik-quilt.jpg

Thanks in advance for helping out an amateur!

The directions are giving you the unfinished block size; in other words the size of the block before you sew them all together. 10.5 inch blocks when sewn together will finish at 10 inches.
So take your 10.5x6.5 rectangle, add a 10.5x2.5 strip to each side and it will give you the 10.5 block. Remember your seam allowance will take .5 on each side, .25 from each fabric per seam. It will work, do a test block and see.

Aha! I get it! Thanks.
I knew it would be easy, I just couldn't wrap my head around it.

Watson.

Glad you got it. It really is a very simple quilt. Sew the sides and you have the block.

When you sew the 2.5" strips to either side of the 6.5" piece using a 0.25" seam, you loose some of the width. The resultant block will be 10.5" wide (and tall!)
