Default controlling speed

I love my Singer AP 676059 Touch & Sew Deluxe Zig Zag Model 628.....but I can't seem to find a 'sweet' spot when it comes to the presser foot/knee bar. Is there a trick to getting it to go only one speed? I seem to go 90 miles an hour no matter how lightly I press either the foot or the knee bar (have tried both ways to see which I could control).
I have a brother sewing machine that has a speed control on it and I have gotten spoiled with that!

Have you lubricated your machine? I've noticed that sometimes a dry machine (that is, in need of oiling) will strain when you first hit the foot control and then go full speed.

My old machine had no speed control so I taped a little block of wood to the pedal so no matter how hard I pressed it, it would only go until it hit the wood. Maybe you can go something similar?

Inspect the speed controller. Sometime the nichrome wires break or the finger contacts wear thin and don't engage properly. If that is the case, get a new, solid state type for your existing wires, if they are good. You can get a solid state controller from Sew-Classic.com. I am replace all the vintage controllers this way. You will never want to go back. Oh yes, some of the old ones get full or dirt from shoes over the years. While you have it open, dump it.
