Default Crayola Washable and Berol Fine Washable for those in the UK

I live in the UK and cannot get the Crayola Ultra Clean Markers. I am just getting ready to mark up a king size antique table cloth to hand quilt, and I have always had success with the Berol Fine Washable markers. Recently I finished a UFO marked up with Berol pale grey and red inks that had been away in a drawer for over a year and it all came out in the washing machine.

After reading NatalieF’s post regarding Crayola Ultra Clean Markers and Letawellman’s comment about manufacturers possibly changing the formulation prompted me to do my own tests on both the Crayola WASHABLE (out of curiosity) and on the new package of Berol Fine that I just bought specifically for this quilt-to-be.

Three samples were made for each (Control; No Iron; Steam Iron) on fine white cotton. The samples were left to “set” for 5 days in a warm room.

Cold Water Soak
Crayola No Iron: No change; nice bright colours!
Crayola Steam Iron: No change
Berol No Iron: Some lightening
Berol Steam Iron: No change

Cold Water soak with delicate/handwash laundry detergent
Crayola No Iron: No change
Crayola Steam Iron: No change
Berol No Iron: Increased lightening but still visible
Berol Steam Iron: Some lightening but still very visible

Cold water soak with Persil Non-Bio laundry detergent
Crayola No Iron: No change
Crayola Steam Iron: No change
Berol No Iron: Significant lightening but still visible
Berol Steam Iron: Increased lightening but still visible

Cold water soak with Persil AND Morrisons stain remover powder for coloured fabrics
Crayola No Iron: Some lightening but still highly visible
Crayola Steam Iron: No change
Berol No Iron: Significant lightening but still visible
Berol Steam Iron: Increased lightening but still visible

Warm water (30c) with Persil and Morrisons stain remover powder for coloured fabrics
Crayola No Iron: Faint Shadowing (probably would not show on patterned or coloured fabric)
Crayola Steam Iron: Heavy shadowing (IMHO not acceptable)
Berol No Iron: All clear
Berol Steam Iron: All Clear except for faint shadow from the black

Glad I did these tests as I am planning on using wool batting so laundering is going to be a big consideration! Looks like a practice piece on an old linen napkin and wool batting is my first step.

I tested a bunch of different marking pens a while ago before marking a quilt. I did find that all of the blue colored markers etc seemed to be harder to get out. I do test whenever I buy a new pkg. Thanks for the reminder.
