I make mug rugs using burlap scraps. I machine embroidery on them and while the fabric is still in the hoop, I place another layer of burlap on the back , put the design back on the machine and then put a decorative stitch (usually a satin stitch) around the design to sandwich the two layers together and to also hide the back. Hope this makes since.

Many thanks for a great tutorial and opening a whole new world of mug rugs. So far I've been making the conventional rectangle and this is going to be fun for me and the recipient.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I wanted to say thank you so much to BuzzinBumble for this tutorial, and thank you also to those responsible for the Word and PDF documents. I'm going to try this tonight - pics to follow! Unless, of course, I make a complete mess of it, in which case I shall try again later, and post pics when I have produced something presentable

Love this leaf pattern but I cheat.! ! ! I make them outside out and just trim with my pinking shears. Everyone I've make them for enjoy using them.

Wow, that is cool Joanie! You should do grape leaves - they have a natural sawtooth edge.
