I make mug rugs using burlap scraps. I machine embroidery on them and while the fabric is still in the hoop, I place another layer of burlap on the back , put the design back on the machine and then put a decorative stitch (usually a satin stitch) around the design to sandwich the two layers together and to also hide the back.
