I have been working on a D9P quilt today, and was getting frustrated that my intersections were not consistently lined up, even after careful cutting, lining and pinning.

SOOO after a few trials and errors, I found a way that makes it easy!! I am sure that some of our more experienced quilters will have already worked this out, but for all the newbies out there..... it works, give it a try!!

I hope the file opens for you all, if not can someone please compress it further if possible Oh Patrice.......  :D

Thanks so much! I struggle with getting exact intersections. I've never seen this chain stitching technique explained. I'm going to give it a try!

DA Mayer 11-07-2009 10:23 PM

I always chain stitch so butt the seams together will not be a problem, thank you.

I hope I explained it simply enough so all our beginners can understand it, the tighter you can butt up the less joining thread there is between each section so less room for slippage while you sew it

Denise, I wish I had discovered this two years ago when I started out, as it really helps line them up and another plus is you have no chance of seams undoing at the edge due to not cutting the threads

n2scraplvr 11-08-2009 08:39 PM

Thank you for the tute! You did a great job! I never pin anything and always nestle my seams but will try nestling closer the next time. ha.ha.  It will be so helpful to lots of people!

Eddie 11-08-2009 08:47 PM

Brilliant! My next quilt is going to be a D9P, so this is very timely. Thank you!

Izy 11-09-2009 12:26 AM

Glad to be of help everyone!! :D :D :D

I finished the rest of the 30 9 patches yesterday, and discovered that it is best to use a slightly shorter length stitch, then there is even less room for movement between the intersections. t The closer you butt the pieces together, the better. You still have to ensure then are nestling correctly and I prefer to 'feel' a tiny ridge where the two vertical edges are really rubbing together, then if they move slightly apart while being sewn, they are still well in line :D

Does that ramble make any sense ??

k3n 11-09-2009 12:51 AM

Izy you are a bloomin' genius! :D :D :D

I only wish I'd known that when I made my Sudoku D9P because that would have helped A LOT as placement of the squares was so critical. Brilliant! Thank you. :D

Izy 11-09-2009 01:00 AM

Hi K, haven't seen much of you on the board since I got back!! :(

At least you know now for your next project   :D

Izy, this is going to be such a timesaver, and I love seeing how other ppl do their piecing and quilting! Fantastic tute.
Even if a person isn't having too much difficulty, this is a great tute to refer to, as I am trying to teach my granddaughter. Pictures are everything!
Thank you so much for sharing with us. :D
