Rhonda's Electric Quilt Class - Week 8 - PatchDraw

10 Attachment(s)
This week we are going to look at PatchDraw. This is a group of tools that allow you to create some applique or stencil designs. They could be used to trace off for quilting designs or you can applique a quilt block with them or you can use them as motifs. If you are going to do applique you can print off templates to use to transform them into applique pieces.

This is a great place to play and explore your creativity! It isn't piecing but it is exciting to see what comes out of playing with the tools.

Here is an Angel I made with the tools and I am going to show you how to do this yourself.

find Block in the top tool bar and click on it
Then click on patchdraw in the menu that pops up.

In EQ5 you will see the Patchdraw tools in the tool bar on the right side of your screen

In EQ7 go to the bottom of your block and click on Applique to get your Patchdraw tools to pop up on your left tool bar

Here you can see the Patchdraw tools in your left tool bar in EQ7. If you don't see all of the tools then click on any tool and this menu will pop up. click on add/remove buttons. Add any buttons you want to use. I think the swath and brush stroke buttons are fun to play with.
Click on the shapes to be able to pop out the shape bars. I had trouble getting mine to pop out so just play with clicking and I tried holding down the left click and dragging it out. Sometimes it worked.

In EQ5 you will see your tools in your right side tool bar. Click on the little black arrow beside the bottom box where you will see a shape. This should pop out your row of shapes.

So choose a shape to play with
On the worktable left click and hold it down and pull the shape across the worktable. As you play with it you will get a feel for how big or how little you want it to start.

After you have your shape find the Bezier Tool
This tool allows you to move a line any way you want.

Just click on a line and you will see two black boxes appear at the ends of that line. You will see a dotted line coming out from each box.

In EQ7 you will have more black boxes in the middle of the lines too. It makes it a bit easier to move and shape the lines.

Each dotted line has a small box on the end. Click on that box to move that end of the line and then you can also shorten the dotted line and or move up and down with it to change and shape your line.

Here I wanted to show you how you can twist this in any way you want to. Just use the dotted lines and move them any direction.

Here I used the leaf shape to start my wings for the angel

Then I used the teardrop shape for the head. I tried the circle but the teardrop has a better shape to change to make it look more like a head.

Here you can see the black box where you can click on it to move the lines on each side of the head to shape the head.

I used the dotted lines to drag the lines down to create the wings shapes.

Now she has a halo and a head and the body and wings still need shaped.

You might want to pay attention to how the pieces look where they connect. Here I think the neck needs to be under the head not up into the head shape.

So go back to the patchdraw side and click on the point of that shape to move the neck down under the head.

Another thing you can play with is the diamond shape or any of the geometrics.
Click on the shape and then left click on the worktable holding it down and dragging the shape across the worktable.

I then added a second one and I started on the same spot the first one started. I moved it so the left side of the second one would meet the right side of the first one.

Here you can see I added a third diamond to close the box. I also did a star. This is just using a straight line and make sure all of your lines connect or you won't be able to color the star.

Here are some of my quilt blocks I made. I had so much fun doing these!!!!!

Even if you never use them for anything it is just plain fun to do this!!
I think you could create coloring pages for a child to color You could draw designs and print them off and use them to frame them! Let the kids play and keep their designs either printed out or turn them into quilt blocks.

You could use your designs to print off your own cards. You could print them off onto inkjet fabric sheets and then use them in a quilt just like you would a photo panel.
Lots of possibilities beyond making applique with them.

Name that Bug!

It isn't me Katie that is amazing it is the program! It is so easy to use. I would never ever sit down with pen and paper and come up with these on my own. But I just chose a shape and started stretching it and moving it and found things I liked and just kept building on that. I have never had so much fun with a program before.

I can't sing it's praises enough. It is a wonderful way to create and let your imagination fly. Then you can go to print and print out templates of what you made! Or print your design off as a stencil and use it to quilt with.

Like I said in the tute so many possibilities of ways to use this.

I was finishing this at 4am so sorry I didn't even think about the PDF. I will get it done today and post it here after while.

One of my many sins is I have a tendency to leave everything to the last minute. I did start doing some of the screenshots the other day but inspiration doesn't hit me unless I wait til I have to push myself to get it done! LOL Hence the working on it til 4am. I didn't really get serious about posting it til midnight. Then I still kept stopping to watch David Tuttera's wedding show. Love that show! The creativity is mind boggling.

rhonda, you have such an imagination, I don,t think there is a limit to your doings, great tut, thanks

Rhonda
Another great tut. Thank you for all you are doing for the people on this board. Hope I can use this program half as well as you do. Your great granddaughter is an angel. I will patiently wait for the PDF.

Thank You so much

Suzy

Rhonda thank you so very much for these lessons. Now if only I can put them to use. I had back surgery so am unable to sit at the computer or sewing machine for long periods. Hopefully soon though.

stitchinwitch 12-27-2011 06:45 AM

Thank you Rhonda for the wonderful tutes that you are creating. I have EQ4 and 5, and thought I knew everything - but you are opening my awareness and interest all over again. I thank you so much for that! You are one heck-of-a-teacher!

Rhonda 12-27-2011 08:28 AM

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I hope you enjoy all the tutorials. I have no idea where it will end. We shall see how much I can pass along.

Sorry about the PDF I came down with a virulent form of the flu and was really sick from 4pm yesterday to now. At least I am able to be up abit now. Haven't tried to eat anything yet. I am diabetic and since all I ate yesterday was a peanut butter sandwich and a small bag of chips at 2 and I went to sleep at 4 til 10pm -so last night my blood sugar was down to 78. I was really weak and shaky and couldn't think. We are both diabetic and I keep frosting in the house so a couple of small bites of frosting and it was back up shortly. But I spent most of the night in the bathroom. Lost a lot of water and I could feel I was dehydrated but I couldn't keep anything down not even pills.

I'm doing a little better so I will work on that PDF today sometime. I am glad you all are getting some good out of the lessons. I am having a blast learning new things from the books and from trial and error. I know a lot of people will only do piecing but I hope those who wanted to do quilting designs to quilt with will see the possibilities in this feature as well as those who like applique. I will continue on with the patchdraw in the next lesson and show more of how to use it. This is all new to me too and I was so excited when I figured it out!

JudyG 12-27-2011 08:42 AM

Rhonda, we all appreciate all you do to put these lessons together for us, and a couple of days wait for the PDF until you feel better is no problem to any of us I am sure. Take care of yourself - that's what's important.

Suzy 12-27-2011 09:24 AM

Rhonda

Please take care, we will survive without the tut, just get better. I have friends that are diabetic and when they get the intestinal garbage that goes around, it can be very scarey. Hope you feel better soon. Praying for a quick recovery.

Suzy

Rhonda 12-27-2011 09:47 AM

Thanks Judy and Suzy. I am on the upswing. Just had some toast and a bottle of water and kept it down so will be doing better soon. At one point I thought this must be how an anorexic feels! My stomach was so empty but I couldn't eat and keep it down. I hate being sick!

Thanks Rhonda for these wonderful lessons. I bought a pile of fabric from my favorite local quilt shop at their pre-inventory sale. Yesterday my husband scanned in my fabrics and because of your lessons I was able to create my king-sized quilt with sashing and borders. It was so fun to see what it is going to look like before it is finished. Your classes are exactly what I needed to get me to do these basics in EQ. This lesson looks like fun...but I'm anxious to get quilting!

I'm thrilled to hear this Merry! I always wonder if anyone is listening and or following my lessons. It is really great to know they helped someone. I love the feedback so I know what is going on with anyone who uses my lessons. Thanks for letting me know!!

You should post your quilt in progress so we can all follow along and watch it grow! I would love to see pictures of your fabrics and the quilt you designed!

Probably because I haven't gotten it done yet. LOL We have been sick with flu here and I haven't done much of anything.

I am spending time catching up today. So I should have it done here soon. Thanks!

Thanks I am doing better tho a bit weak yet. But now I have 3 grandkids here sick with the flu. Mom and Dad run a Chiro clinic and Mom (DD) has to run the office. So I ended up with the 3 kids. Throwing up and all. LOL We use a plastic groc sack in a plastic container or a paper sack so it is all contained and throw away. The kids are all old enough to know they have to keep one with them and use it. So it really isn't a big deal. The kids all slept all afternoon til 5 pm and then they have finally quit throwing up I hope. Tho we are just now trying a little soup and crackers. Hopefully it will all stay down. Sara -mom- got them gatorade and I have been trying to get them to drink that. Rachel because of her Russell Silvers Syndrome runs the risk of dehydration more than most kids and we don't need her in the hosp again so I have been keeping an eye on her blood sugar and all. They are saying they are hungry so they are getting better slowly. Seems to be a 24 hr bug.

verna2197 12-30-2011 05:24 AM

I will say a prayer for the kids and glad to hear you are feeling better.

thanks Sondra and Verna we are all pretty much over it now. It seems to be a 24 hr thing and I guess we have quite an epidemic going around here. I don't get out that much so didn't know.

QuiltnNan 01-02-2012 07:44 AM

Thanks for another great tut.

Dearest Rhonda,
You are a gem. Glad you are feeling better. DH got this Christmas Eve, gave him musinex and my backup Z Pack ( Zithromax) which takes about three to four days to kick in...it has worked and he was back to work the Friday after Christmas...still weak though. My Doctor says if you have a fever with this, the Z Pack will work on this illness. It is a virus that is mimmicking the flu....Doing a darn good job of that! He said it is airborne ( sneezing and coughing), and you can get it again. So please be careful with all of your sick little ones.

I was wondering, did you do pdf's on the Introduction and week #2? Thank you, for all that you have done and are providing to us novices out here. It has been so enlightening to follow your instruction.

Everyone seems to be back up and running again. Especially the kids! LOL They were throwing up one morning and the next morning they were bouncing off the walls! LOL Just a 24 hr bug thank goodness. But it is nasty while you have it.

Here is the link to the Electric Quilt section in Topics List. All the classes are there.

I am going to post a thread soon with all the PDF links in one place.

Looking for the PDF for lesson #5. there was an error in lesson # 7 so I couldn't print or save the PDF. Any help would be greatfully appreciated.
I am trying to find out how to print quilt and fabric requirements on same page. If anyone can help, please let me know or tell me where to find the info

Did you see this link with all of them? Hopefully that might help. http://www.quiltingboard.com/tutoria...a-t195158.html

ALSO.... Rhonda might not see this posting so you could send her a PM, she is very helpful.

Rhonda 04-26-2015 08:06 PM

Thanks thimblebug As for the answer - I would print off the fabric requirements on a page and then run the same page back through the printer and print the quilt on the same page. I doubt the software will do both on one page for you.

quiltjoey 04-27-2015 01:47 PM

Hi Rhonda: So glad to hear all of your family are up and doing well!
I jut want to thank you for all you are doing for all of us members here on the board. You've helped me a lot with EQ7 and I appreciate all you do....
JoAnn

Rhonda 04-27-2015 02:03 PM

thank you JoAnn I appreciate your kind words. I love to help if I can.

quiltjoey 05-11-2015 02:39 PM

Hi Rhonda: Hope all is still well with you and your family. You may have addressed this but I am trying to figure out how to make and print stipples and other FMQing patterns in EQ7. I know there is a way to do it but am at a loss. Do I need to buy the quilt software? Or download from the Net, FMQing patterns? I know you will know the answer! Thanks in advance...
JoAnn

Rhonda 05-11-2015 02:54 PM

the quick answer is you can import any design or motif you want into your EQ7. then you use the right layer(I'd have to look up which one) and lay the motif as in stippling over each quilt block or section.

So find on the internet or create your own design for fmq and import it. You can scan the image into your pc and import it from there if you create your own design.

If you need more than just pointed in the right direction let me know and I'll do a bit more digging in the book.

quiltjoey 05-11-2015 04:07 PM

Thanks! I'll give it a try...

Once you get your quilt done on EQ7 with your fmq on there then you should be able to print it out the same as normal.
