After seeing a 1930's Rocky Road to Kansas block made into a pillow top, I decided to design my own with a similarity to it being a chunky-style block. I loved that part and since I had never seen one done in crazy patch, that was my goal. The ideas came as I worked on it, so nothing was preplanned. I had intended on joining the blocks in the traditional way, but decided I liked the effect of them being disjoined which created a lovely white cross in the center. It also gave the appearance of viewing it through a window.
There is no squaring anything uup with this type of block. You'll only be trimming where the sections meet in the middle and are joined together. We'll be making this mini today! [ATTACH=CONFIG]181892[/ATTACH] |

The whole purpose of this tute was to show how to avoid the traditional Rocky Road to Kansas block's points that have no room left for joining the blocks together so I developed my own style. Here's a picture showing the reason better:

Also, at the end of this tute, I'll show you several ways to finish the mini for 4 different looks.
We'll be making 16 Crazy Patch blocks to be turned into 4 whole blocks. There are no instructions in this tute for the Crazy Patch portion so please refer to sites on the web for making a Crazy Patch block if you don't already know how. I paid no attention to color in the blocks other than the fact I made it a point to have tiny pieces of white in each block. That's all! You might want to do the same! All you'll need is some muslin and lots of small scraps! Of course, you'll need the typical quilting tools too! I did iron along the way, but because the pieces are so tiny, they popped back up. Any cardboard will work for a template as you download my patter, but I like the thin cardboard that comes between the layers of drinks in a case of soda. You'll see the impressions they make on the cardboard in the pictures! Enjoy the tute! Let's get started! having a lid on the box keeps the pieces dust-free also!
