After seeing a 1930's Rocky Road to Kansas block made into a pillow top, I decided to design my own with a similarity to it being a chunky-style block. I loved that part and since I had never seen one done in crazy patch, that was my goal. The ideas came as I worked on it, so nothing was preplanned. I had intended on joining the blocks in the traditional way, but decided I liked the effect of them being disjoined which created a lovely white cross in the center. It also gave the appearance of viewing it through a window.

There is no squaring anything uup with this type of block. You'll only be trimming where the sections meet in the middle and are joined together.

We'll be making this mini today!

The whole purpose of this tute was to show how to avoid the traditional Rocky Road to Kansas block's points that have no room left for joining the blocks together so I developed my own style. Here's a picture showing the reason better:

Also, at the end of this tute, I'll show you several ways to finish the mini for 4 different looks.

We'll be making 16 Crazy Patch blocks to be turned into 4 whole blocks. There are no instructions in this tute for the Crazy Patch portion so please refer to sites on the web for making a Crazy Patch block if you don't already know how. I paid no attention to color in the blocks other than the fact I made it a point to have tiny pieces of white in each block. That's all! You might want to do the same! All you'll need is some muslin and lots of small scraps! Of course, you'll need the typical quilting tools too!

I did iron along the way, but because the pieces are so tiny, they popped back up. Any cardboard will work for a template as you download my patter, but I like the thin cardboard that comes between the layers of drinks in a case of soda. You'll see the impressions they make on the cardboard in the pictures! Enjoy the tute! Let's get started!

having a lid on the box keeps the pieces dust-free also!

it says 'now let's trim the other side' (sorry the lettering blurred somehow)

That's the last one! Hope you enjoyed my tute

Your very welcome, sawsan! You will have 11-1/2" when you join your 4 blocks together! It will then measure 17-1/2" with the last muslin border added. From then on, add what you want or leave as is! Thank you for mentioning sizes!! Forgot

 about that! Will make a great little mini either way! Have fun with your scraps! :-D 8-) :-D ;)

Your welcome! Thanks for the good suggestion of the template size! For everyone interested, make a 3" square and at the 2.5" mark, draw a line to the corner for each side! Transfer the pattern to cardboard, plastic or acrylic! :-D

HERE'S A TIP:

I never handled those real tiny pieces you see in the blocks! They came about from whacking off the side of larger blocks sewn together, then other sections were added to create those tiny looking pieces. Another tip is that both small and large pieces look very good together in a crazy patch so cut some of those sides off your sections and reattach them. Have fun! :D

Thanks for the tute. It looks amazing. I also like the block with the white cross in the center, makes the scrappy stand out. Some day I'll have to try this. This year I need to finish all my UFO's. I'll have to bookmark this so I don't forget.

Your welcome, Eileen!! You are so right -- the center cross really makes it stand out so can't wait to HQ it for it to even pop more!! Sure hope you can get a handle on all those UFO's so you can try my method! Now to decide which border it will be....hmmm ;) ;) ;) 8-) :-D :-D

Right now it measures 22-1/2 x 23 but I may not be done with it yet.....hmmm....now I'm thinking about cutting it in half....the border that is!! haha. I'm beginning to like the idea of 1/2 the border being removed. It would create an entirely different look! Thank you so much, GrandmK! It's so much fun playing with borders!

Hi n2, Just caught your thread here. Are you sure you want to cut the borders in 1/2? I just copied and pasted the quilt pic into Publisher and cropped about half the borders off. Here's a pdf of my results. (Hope it comes up) What do you think, now? G

n2scraplvr 04-12-2011 05:26 PM

Hi oksewglad! Thank you for doing that! I haven't seen it yet, but just got done taking a pic with 1/2 the border covered with muslin and I love it. It takes the focus off the center with the border too wide. It's 3" now and 2" would suffice. I have never downloaded any pdf software yet so can't see the file, don't want Adobe, and tried dlding 2 others and they weren't free like they said. Will try a few others so I can see your pic! Will also go resize my pic and download for you to see what you think. Be back in a min. n2
