Default Day trip to Tucson AZ Goodwill and another 201 for $24!

I bit the bullet and bid on the 201 with bad wiring and cut cord, untested, bad table and no front picture . . . with Sally scratched into the bed. It was a pickup only and no one bid by 4 pm yesterday. So I bid max $20.00 and forgot about it till this morning.

Well last minute someone bid against me and ran my bid to $19 plus $5 shipping and handling. Why shipping and handling when I picked up?

Anyway, after traveling around Tucson listening to my GPS who didn't have a clue where she was going, I finally found Goodwill. They carried the machine to my van still sight unseen and off I went back to Phoenix.

I dragged it out of the van and took it into the house. Set it up and this is what I found.

I have a very nice 1942 singer 201 with a cut cord. I used my FW cord and foot pedal to try her out. She runs just like a 201! She also has the ornate faceplate. My first. All my others have the one with the lines. So, no using for parts, Joe :-)

I got her home late. No enough light to do a complete cleaning. I turned her over and she was full of "fuzzy" cobwebs. Anyone living in Arizona will know what the fuzzy cobwebs mean (black widow webs). I did sit down with a very long paint brush and a can of spider killer. The cobwebs are gone and thankfully nothing skittered out from under her.

She has a few tiny chips on her light, which also works by the way and her name is going to be Sally, since that's the name scratched into the bed. I'm betting on the original owner having a young daughter named Sally who probably walked around with a pretty sore butt after her mone saw what she did. :-)

Wow!!! What a deal you got on your machine. I'm glad that Sally will work for you. Now does that mean that you need to get another cord for her, or were the parts with her? Why would someone cut the cord??? What kind of case does she have? I also like the ornate faceplates. Congrats on getting a great machine. I want to see pictures of Sally!

I can't remember what kind of face plate my 201-2 h as on it. Probably the plain one.
Check your LSMG for a replacement cord or Sew-Classics.

For the "Sally" on the bed I'd try some Testor's gloss black model paint with a very tiny brush. Several coats in the scratches should fill them. Then perhaps some shellac or clear coat over that.

Yes, I know about fuzzy cob webs. Lord how I hate Black Widow spiders. Those miserable things get everywhere.
Considering how many I've killed over years I'm surprised they aren't extinct.

    Joe

I love your story. When I was six years old I scratched my brother's name into my grandma's piano with a dart. Problem was, he was 4 and didn't know how to write! Many years later, my brother prompted his boys to ask their auntie why dad's name was on the piano. Yikes!

Isn't Goodwill great. I was out last Wednesday and found a whole lot of embroidery floss and 4 spools of serger thread a mini iron and 7 packs of bias binding for 2.93. I was a happy camper.....

I just discovered shopgoodwill.com! I am addicted. I have been looking at some 301's on this site. I have been outbid on a local one ($61.00 - currently), but found another one to keep an eye on - it would have to be shipped to me, but that would be ok with me if I got it for a good price --- what is a good price on a 301?????
