Default 15-91 motor covered in grease

Hi all,

I have a 15-91 that needs to be rewired. I took it apart and it looks like the genious that maintained this last put oil in the motor.

It is absolutely covered with grease and the wiring is REALLY bad.

Looks like this http://vssmb.blogspot.com/2011/12/ho...r-part-12.html, and what Nicholas calls worst case scenario.

Any idea on how to remove this?

Will carb cleaner destroy the wiring?

Since the grease has seaped into all the wires, does the field core need to be rewired?

I did test the motor before tearing it apart and it did work.

Thanks everyone.

Wipe out as much as you can without hurting the motor then use Breakclean and hose it out. Breakcleaner disolves oils and greases as it cleans and it won't hurt the wiring.

No the field coil and armature won't need to be rewired.

You'll need to really read forum member Rain's tutorial
{ http://vssmb.blogspot.com/search/label/rewiring }
before you get to going on the wiring.

I've done one potted motor and it was easy. Well compared to wiring a house it was easy.

I asked my DH about this earlier - and he said "brake cleaner" he said carb cleaner is much harsher and he won't use that on electrical items.

He also said that if the oil has soaked into the armature winding (through the tape) then you may not be able to do anything about it. At that point, he'd opt for a replacement. There is a lacquer coating on the armature wires (under the tape) and if you remove that along with the grease, it will short out.
