The main bodies of both sides are now done. The second side has a lot fewer flaws than the first side I completed. Overall I'm pleased with how it's looking. The finished quilt will be close to 7 ft square. Thanks to the generosity of the members of QB it's no longer the little lap quilt I thought I was starting.
I went and bought more fabric to finish the quilt this morning. I bought 2 1/2 yards for sashing and borders at the beginning of the project. It turns out that was just enough to do the sashing. I bought another 4 yards this morning for the borders and binding. It's amazing how much fabric a quilt actually needs. I should have the borders on by the end of tomorrow then it's quilting and binding time.

How are you doing money-wise? Have you received enough to pay for the fabric that you have purchased and for postage?

This beautiful quilt will be at least queen size and approaching King size. I know that it is taking King size effort on your part to do this and I certainly send my thanks and will send some money if you need some. PLEASE tell us, it isn't fair that you should have the financial burden as well as the physical work of making all our many sized blocks into a quilt. Most of us have done that...make a quilt out of blocks made by many others and know the difficulty you can encounter. You certainly a master of both sewing and patience. Thank you.

Thank you for all the kind words. Careful, it's getting hard for me to get my head through doorways. It's getting way too big. I know for a fact that I'm not a master of either sewing or patience.

All the donations that people have sent me went toward the fabric for the borders and sashing. We have a great quilting fabric store in Chehalis called Sisters. They have one of the largest selections of nothing but quilting fabrics and supplies that I've ever seen. They also have a website. I think they advertise having 11,000 bolts of fabric in stock. I believe it, the store is packed floor to ceiling with fabrics from front to back. Sisters is where I bought the fabric for this quilt and if you find yourself anywhere near Chehalis it's well worth checking out.

I originally thought I would buy a good solid for the sashing and borders. No such luck, nothing was all that close in the solids or regular prints. All the stuff that was close was closer to being an aqua than a turquoise except the batik I found. The other fabrics were dull and lifeless by comparison. I knew it was the right fabric as soon as I saw it. When Olivia and I went fabric shopping the first time we also found a great pink batik that actually has some turquoise in it too. It matches the turquoise fabric beautifully as well as being a great fabric in it's own right. I bought some of that for the binding and corner blocks.

The frugal, sensible (tightwad) part of me hates paying full retail for anything, including nice batiks. The fabrics I bought were worth every penny. I've bought a total of 6 1/2 yards of fabric for this quilt just for sashing, borders, and binding. It was the donations of the people here that made buying the best fabrics I could find, not just the best I could afford, possible. I honestly don't think any other fabrics would have worked as well.


Everyone here has been absolutely fantastic in their support and generosity already. Normally I wouldn't ask for any more help but frankly our finances are in terrible shape with no hope of getting better any time soon. If anyone still wants to help, I will be very grateful for any donations they want to send. The only expense left is shipping.

The size of the quilt will be 7 ft by 7 ft, or at least within a couple inches of that. The finished borders will be around 5 to 6 inches, I think anything smaller wouldn't look right. I think the quilt will be pretty close to queensize without any overhang. Thanks to all the support from members here it's not the lap quilt I thought I would make when I started this project. There is also another smaller box about the size of a thick paperback book that will be going along with it. Do any of you know if I can use a large flat rate box? I'm hoping I can.

I put a queen and lap sized quilt in a box about the size of a large flat rate. You just need to get as much air out as you can. I've even resorted to vacuum packing fluffy stuff to make it all fit (that was vintage lace into a small flat rate box).

BTW - you should be getting some fun stuff today! And then you'll have a large flat rate box to check for size. I know you can get them free at the PO - but this way you don't have to get one first to see if it will fit.
