HI, I have a black featherweight machine. It has not been used in quite a while and it's running rough and heavy. I did put a drop of oil in the bobbin case. The booklet says to put oil in two motor grease tubes. I looked at the picture and the machine and I don't know where these tubes are. Could someone give me some tips on how to make the machine run smoother? And ideas of where to oil it? Thanks so much!!! DaleenKay

Don't put oil in the motor GREASE tubes--use Singer lubricant, which is easily found at places like Joann's.

The manuals I have say "never" just before that part. Do you have a scan of the manual page that says this? My manual also explains why oil will ruin your motor. MaryTGs advice is good. If you can't find Singer motor lube, apparently vaseline is quite an acceptable substitute.

Your machine also needs more oil than just a drop hopefully on the hook/race, not in the bobbin case.

The manual should show a multitude of places that require oil.

As a general rule of thumb: remove the faceplate, remove the cover on the bottom of the machine and loosen the screw on the plate where the spool pin is, turn it 180 degrees, then re-tighten that screw.

Now - Any gears get grease - as do the 2 grease tubes on the motor - and any other place where metal rubs on metal when the handwheel turns should get a drop of oil.

These machines were usually intended to be oiled "daily" assuming that they were seeing a day's worth of use. In general, I suggest about every 8 hours of use or when it's been sitting for more than a couple of weeks.

I've found that taking the motors apart and using and eraser to get the carbon dust off the contacts helps.
