Different basting sprays can cause the problem. Unnamed product in blue can is the worst, in my experience. I press the top after spray basting. Shoves any potential wrinkles to the outside and sets the spray. But...this weekend was finishing a wal hanging. Only spray in the house was the dregs if the dreaded blue can. Used it. Would have spent less time going to the store than the time spent in cleaning the gunk off the needle, bobbin case, hook race, etc.

I used the 505 spray on the quilt I'm doing and it hasn't caused any problems. Mine sat for a couple days before I got around to the stitching so maybe that helped it set too.

Has anybody tried free motion quilting on a Singer Featherweight?

People do, but it's not good on the motor to go full out for an extended time. And with that teeny tiny throat space...why bother when there are so many machines better suited for FMQing.

I've only used basting spray once. It had plenty of time to dry so I didn't experience any problems. Good to know the potential exists and what the solution is though.

Me either, Mavis. I don't like the basting sprays, they smell and get everything sticky.

Great game! I love basting spray for small projects.

I don’t see why you can’t FMQ on one, but if you do decide to FMQ on your Featherweight, you might want to consider removing the light bulb and use auxiliary lighting. Depending on how large your quilting item is that you’re quilting, the small throat space may cause a wad of your item to rest against the light for an extended period of time. Those light bulbs can get fairly hot.

Still would love to see a video of your wife FMQ a quilt on her 301A, would love to see it in action!

Quilting a twin size quilt on Orphan Annie(Universal clone) using poly batting I had to replace a section of the batting that melted from being up against the light. Lesson learned.
