Default A "Gem" for the machine shed - SewGem

I got this one a week ago, and finally had time to get some pictures. One of the last American sewing machine companies making machines in the US.

This one is in very nice condition.

The larger front slide seems to be decorative only - nothing under it to get at. The bobbin is to the right of the needle.

DH and I are thinking of expanding the Machine Shed - we've got the other half and I'm not using it much as a summer kitchen anymore. It's about the same size, and if we rebuilt that half, my long arm will be going out there too. I'd move all the Singers out there too - which would make it much "quieter" in the house LOL!!

This is a sweet machine! Your shed sounds wonderful, to be able to have your machines where you can see and use them is super.

I wonder about that decorative slide. I wonder if there may have been an earlier model that used it and instead of retooling or getting rid of old castings they decided it would be cheaper to machine the base and install the slide.

No matter the reason for it, it's a cool design. Seeing things like that is why these old machines are so fascinating to me.
Seeing your machine reminds me of a machine I saw on Craig's List quite a while ago. For whatever reason someone painted "Sew Gem" on a Singer 101. It was definitely a 101. That's why it stuck with me. I still wonder why.

Love the machine and the finish. Have you dated it?

That's an interesting machine. I smiled when I read you're ready to expand your shed space! Go for it!

Cathy, I could almost "see" the enlargement of your "Shed" coming many months ago! Congratulations. Your "Gem" is unique --- I don't think I've ever seen a sewing machine with the bobbin to the right of the needle bar. Of course, I'm still a rank amateur, but that's one I've never seen before! Congratulations again to both you and your DH!

I love the case on that machine.
I have been thinking about your summer kitchen since the tomatoes started coming in around here.
