I'd take it to a Bernina dealer, if you have one close, and get it serviced. I took a 930 that I picked up to one, and it only cost $150 or so. Well worth it for a machine of that caliber.

I also have an 830 Bernina. When I started quilting I was using my mom's Kenmore, then a friend told me about
830. So started the hunt. Found one in Worthington, MN. Use it a lot, if in fact I am using right now.

I think Annette is right about the stitch selection lever ( the one that switches from straight and zigzag to deco stitches). I can manually get it in place, but not using the lever. Have been, and will be, busy all weekend, so just soaked the area in oil and will look at it Monday, I hope. I've heard of using a hair dryer to loosen things up, and may try that. Annette, I'd try the WD-40, but am not quite sure how to get it back out - do you just dry it out, or do you try to blow it onto the sides of the machine, or to the bottom? Could I put an old cloth underneath the area and blow it onto that? Just don't have the mental picture!

Yes, you dry it out -- that's a good way to put it. It evaporates. I use a pair of long tweezers and push a flannel rag down inside to soak up any puddles. You could put a rag down in there before you spray. The blow dryer works to loosen the gummy stuff, but it doesn't remove it.

Good Luck with your fabulous machine!

Annette, I didn't have much time last week so just oiled the area a couple of times, and it came loose! The lever clicks into place just fine. I think I will sew on it a while before I try to sell it, just to get the oil into all the tight places, and to be sure it works well. Would hate to sell it and then have it freeze up the next day. BTW, our Craigslist has one priced at $700 - I should put that one in the giggles thread!

Don't laugh too hard. We had a customer who lost control of her bidding somehow, and ended up paying $1000 for an 830 on ebay. It was gummed-up pretty good, but we got it going just fine. The most we've ever sold one for is $500, but it came with LOTS of feet and other goodies.

Enjoy your machine! You may not want to part with it.
