OK, so who's volunteering to pick it up and find out who's right?
Incidentally, the German 401(G) looks like a rocketeer (has the same 'helmet' bit on the top left).

It is for absolutely sure a 500 or 503. The 401G does not have the large oval cover plate, even though the very front has the more swept/fin look of the 500.

I agree about this is one way to get a real good deal on a machine - since the seller attributes no value to what is inside the cute little desk.

Aside from other visual clues, one can tell them apart because the 401 has a thin hand wheel, and the 500 has a smaller, thicker hand wheel, like the one in the picture.

I'd probably pick it up just to get that cool mod cabinet.

I vote for Singer 500, upside down and backwards.

maybe it's got a really ugly other side. I see a lot of photos of backs of sewing machines, with none of the front. Usually the decals are much better on the back side.

Reminds me of someone talking about their ex's new girlfriend. Said she had a butter face. Everything about her looked really fine - but her face . . .

if it's in your area close enough, it's still worth the $50. You may be surprised how good condition the machine is in and you may still be able to get your money back or part of. Or keep it.
