To plug a sewing machine into a light socket you need one of these little do-dads:

Handy little things to have around.
This one even has polarized slots.

I would guess that, yes, once 2-prong receptacles were developed, the old screw-in light socket terminals were swapped out for convenience and safety. Plus, having a cord running from your sewing machine up to the light socket was probably considered “unsightly” once the 2-prong plug-ins came along, and were therefore probably eliminated if possible.

My book doesn't give edition, it says Copyright, U.S.A., 1915, 1923, 1924, 1926-30, 1932-38, 1940, 1941, 1947 and 1948 by the Singer Manufacturing Co.
I am assuming mine is 1948 as that is the last year named. It has 9 chapters.
