Default Montgomery Ward Model E Machine

Found this machine at an old time country auction. I couldn't let her go by. Paid $1.50 for her. She is in bad shape, with missing parts (I am thinking) but I was interested in the bullet style bobbin. So I had to bring her home and tinker with her. Anyone know where I can find her serial number? I've googled it, but have been unsuccessful. Thanks in advance for any information!

I believe this machine was made by National Sewing Company. They made for so many companies. That is pretty much all I can find on this machine. I do not see a serial number anywhere. There are missing parts, the tension knob on the front, and the plate over the bobbin. Thanks for trying!

I think you are correct that it is a badged National machine.

Have you looked on the front lower lip of the machine. Some serial numbers are just stamped into the metal and don't have a "badge plate." I know I have had trouble finding serial numbers even though I know where it is supposed to be. I think some have the SN in the front under the slide plate. Try looking sideways or with a flashlight in different positions.

A very similar machine with a different MW front inspection plate at http://needlebar.org/cm/displayimage.php?pid=7866

I think your only option will be a parts machine or from someone who disassembled and is selling the parts separately. Here is a pic of a whole machine, so you can see what the tension assembly looks like. You are blessed to have the shuttle included. Not always easy to find. Slideplates can be made of varied materials such as hotel keys, old credit cards and the like.

I actually think you have most of the unique tension assembly and might be able to get away with a common honey comb spring and hand nut, even though the MW hand nut looks different. Do you have other machines from which you can try the spring hand nut?

Update: the Singer beehive spring and hand nut are too small.

What you need is the same as on my Plymouth and Graybar machines, although the hand nut for your machine looks different. It is concave, mine are solid and rounded Still think it would fit.

Hope this helps.

Looks a bit older than my VS MW badged machine.
