I think you are correct that it is a badged National machine.

Have you looked on the front lower lip of the machine. Some serial numbers are just stamped into the metal and don't have a "badge plate." I know I have had trouble finding serial numbers even though I know where it is supposed to be. I think some have the SN in the front under the slide plate. Try looking sideways or with a flashlight in different positions.
