I'm new to sewing/treadling and looking for help.
 

Hello everyone,

I am completely new to sewing, I have been reading and trying to make sense of it all. I bought a New Home treadle a couple of days ago and I believe-from the serial number, that is a 1908. I know it needs a new belt, but I believe its complete. It didnt include a owners manual and I havent been able to locate one. Also when I open the top the sewing machine doesnt come all the way up, it seems the cable cord underneath is to long but it doesnt appear to be able to be tightened.? I have cleaned the cabinet but havent began on the machine itself, the decals appear to be in good shape a little silvering. I think shes just beautiful though!

Next, I just recently bought that same sewing machine! I just checked to see if I had a manual for it. I don't have a manual for the machine but I have one for the New Home attachment set. It has a little bit about maintenance but doesn't tell how to open and close the machine. Can you explain what you mean by "the cable cord underneath is too long"? Can you see anything preventing the machine from coming all the way out of the hole?

Now that I look at your pictures again I think there is something wrong with the "flap" of wood that sits right behind your machine. On my machine, that flap pick "up" to let the machine be let down into the cabinet and then you lift that 'flap' of wood again to allow the machine to come back up. Once you have the machine in the up position then you let the 'flap' of wood down and it should stop flat with the rest of the cabinet and then the machine rests on that while you sew. I can post some pictures if you would like.

On your machine it looks like the 'flap' of wood in down inside the cabinet and I'm pretty sure that it's not supposed to be. Check to see if the hinges of that piece need repair.

I've added a pic to kind of show you how the back piece of wood sits flush with the rest of the top. When I want to close the machine, I lift it up and forward. Then I lift that back piece of wood so that I can then lower the machine down into the cabinet. Once the machine is inside I again lower the piece of wood and it will still be flush with the rest of the top of the cabinet.

Thank you very much for responding. If I pull up on the machine then the back board is flat like yours. In my first picture on the bottom the gap in the back, when the machine goes down it slides down a ramp type deal. I will go take a picture real quick and post it. The cable is attached to a medal bar on the backside of the front new home design that folds up when opened and it runs under the sewing machine, up the back wall and on a pulley to the door on top that opens. The machine did come with the attachments:thumbup:. Thank you so much for helping me.

Im sorry I forgot to attach the picture, it is me standing on the right side facing the left side. The ramp is on the top right, the shinier piece of wood is the little back flap, then the larger sewing machine base. I can take a picture with the machine pulled up if you want.

My back flap only lifts upward. It doesn't go downward inside the cabinet.

Thats how all the ones I have found work, I havent seen any with the cable either. The first pic is when i pull up on the machine it seems like it would lock if the cable was shorter. The second pic is when the machine goes down it shows a better view of the cable running under the machine through the pulley and to the top. I thought maybe a pulley was missing but didnt find any screw holes or scaring.

My machine sits on the front edge of the back flap of wood. I have to lift the machine a little bit higher than it will be sitting, then I lower the back flap so that it sits flush with the rest of the top, and then lower the machine so that it is now sitting with it's back edge on ​the front edge of the wood flap. The wood flap holds the machine up in place while sewing.

I like how your cabinet has the built in measuring tape. Is the tension very hard to figure out?

I haven't actually used it yet...lol! I have it sitting in my kitchen just looking pretty. All of my other antique machines are Singers and there is tons of cleaning and restoring information on the web about those. I don't know anything about the New Home, yet.
