Question about Free Westinghouse

I have a local Sewing shop who called me because he has a customer with a Free Westinghouse VS.

They are looking for a shuttle and bobbin. They mentioned part number "CE32057" Style 281650

for whatever that is worth. Does anyone have any suggestions for sourses or compatible?

Steve,

I have a Free made just before it became Free Westinghouse. It has the Westinghouse motor on it and is a fair copy of the Singer Mdl 27. It uses the same bobbins and shuttle as the Singer 127 I have. I don't know if they all do, but it would be worth a try.

I have a Free Westinghouse I bought last month at a thrift store for fifteen dollars...It is in great shape but the cabinet needs repair...I like you cannot find bobbins...I will be watching to see if anyone has any suggestions....

Me too as I picked up one an ALB with the turtle motor. Yet I read on one site that for mine the Kenmore 71 bobbin 10625 should work with the one I have. Thinking the size was/is 7/8 " Then I read the Kenmore 71 was made by White...not 100% sure this information is right???

The Kenmore 71 is probably the 120.71, which was made by New Process Gear Corp (a division of Chrysler).
If it is the 120.71 it takes the size H bobbin. Which is the same size as the Featherweight bobbin.

That is interesting if that Kenmore 71 is the 120.71 which uses the Featherweight bobbin...

This is where I found one of the information: http://www.ismacs.net/sears/sears.html

And here is where I found bobbins and rotary bobbin case for Free Westinghouse ALB which says it also fits Kenmore 71: http://sewingmachine221sale.bizland....re/page44.html

I hate to argue with Graham over at ISMACS, but the picture in the first link is a New Process Gear Corp. machine.
It takes the 3368 bobbin case with the smaller bobbin, #1025 aka H. The H bobbin package that I have ( somewhere) in my collection states that it fits the Featherweight. I will have to try the H bobbin in my Featherweight and try the Featherweight bobbin in my Kenmore 71. Unfortunately I won't be home until Sunday afternoon to try this out.
Joe has a 120.49 which is basically the same machine. Maybe he can try it out for us.

Since you are talking about a Free Westinghouse machines are they worth anything and are they good machines? I've seen a few for sale but didn't know anything about them.

"I have a local Sewing shop who called me because he has a customer with a Free Westinghouse VS."

I only collect older machines so I have no idea of the value. I think the thread is no longer about Free Westinghouse machines (wink)

Well, my Free Sewing Machine Co VS machine is a cast iron TANK. The head alone must weight close to 35 pounds. It sews great, is quieter than every other VS machine I've got and used, and as I said above uses Singer style shuttles and bobbins.
Are they good machines ... yes. Are they as good as their contemporary Singers .... yes. Do they have a high resale value .... no.
Are they worth buying and using ... definitely.
