Last night Wilbur and I cleaned up a Singer 128. He was bug eyed and mouth open while we worked on it. He knows what is in sewing machine guts but that one was new. He turned the wheel and I oiled. And he exclaimed about the little boat -er - "shuttle, Wilbur" - "BOAT GRANDMA, BOAT." So today I went over it again. It has paint coming off the plate - it would be rough for sewing and some of the paint has turned green around that rough area - the bottom of the machine was fine - makes me wonder if someone used liquid wrench or something to eat the paint. Any ideas how to smooth all that up? It amazes me how well those old machines can be cleaned up and be made to work. This one turns very nice now. There was no rust on the shuttle.

Hi everyone. I am new here, and new to sewing and quilting. Just tonight we went and picked up a treadle sewing machine my mom inherited before I was born, but never received until now. I believe it to be a Richmond. I can post pictures tommorow, can't take them tonight. I was wondering if anyone knew what years of was made, how to clean it up without taking it out of the cabinet, and hope to thread it. Again I will post pictures tomorrow.

Miriam, I have had good results with small areas or chips with touch up paint that you can get at an auto supply store. The kind that has a small brush like a bottle of nail polish. Your 128 is black and the paint I used worked well. On a large area it would be a different story because the brush strokes would be more visible.

Jan, I haven't been visiting here much lately myself - too busy with my FIL, but it sure is nice to hear from you! I am so glad you are doing ok - getting on with your life! It is pretty cool you got to see the fishy quilt in person -- hehehe, Glenn must take it everywhere with him!

Here are the pictures of what i believe to be a Richmond. Any info is appreciated. I have found what I believe to be the model number of 2601777. It also has a Gold Metal plate on front that says Charles William Stores New York City. Thanks, and Thanks for allowing me into your community.

Yes it does, except for the decals. You can't see them much in the picture though. Very Similar.

I have seen the same machine Badged in several different names. A Badged machine is basically a machine that is sold to different businesses by a large manufacturer where they put their own name and or decals on them with very little, if any, other changes. You could see the same machine with the Macy's name on it for an example. It sounds like it was sold to, and then by, a department store that put a name on it to their liking. Not exactly the same but very similar to my Windsor B. sold by Montgomery Wards.
