I found a photo of your setup (not sure which year) on the Florida Frontiersman website in the current “Visitor Information” section. It looks like a good setup. I still have a couple of my Dutch ovens but haven’t used them since back in the late 80s at Boy Scout Camp. I was the desert man for the troop, and made things like pineapple upside-down cake and cobblers in camp. The Scout Master, “Greasy” (nicknamed years earlier while working in a gas station during High School) cooked most of the food in large cast iron skillets. His nickname fit for a cook. I made my cobblers off to one side while he cooked. I was an Assistant Scout Master, nicknamed “Knotty”, because I taught knot tying and lashing. Most of the adults had a nickname of some sort, usually hung on us by the boys.

We have a lot of Boy Scouts that come in and learn, too. School days are on Thursday - the most fun is to be a tour guide - this year I let somebody else walk all over the place. DH got named Grumpy by my son on the way down one year - he fit the name - so when I made the sign I was fussing at him and he said I better make it plural rather than singular...

I showed my wife the photo of the deer shoulder that the trapper in Florida was cooking, and shortly after that my wife told me that today was Groundhog Day. I told her that was fine with me, we can have deer shoulder some other night....

CD we have done all kinds of cooking over a fire - our favorite is to fool a new comer. We sent a lady in to the dellie for some sort of meat one time - maybe it was possum or gopher I forget. We used hot dogs and cut them in quarters lengthwise when she couldn't get any. You should fix her some...

Hey, those stories go back to the Jerry Clower, comedian, and his possum on a half-shell (armadillo - you spell it)!

These messages have reminded us of our younger days and outdoor fun cooking over campfires. Thanks CD and Miriam:)

Our family has always enjoyed campfire cooking too. Our long-handled open-fire popcorn popper got a real workout over the years, and was a hit at Scout Camp during those years too. One memorable time of fun camp cooking was at Scout Camp when I turned a bunch of non-believers into believers when I baked them biscuits in a cardboard box. I could have won some money with that feat.

My wife and I still regularly enjoy beer can chicken cooked in our wood-burning grill in the backyard, and we’ve done an occasional trashcan turkey cooked just off of the patio out there too. Our large pecan tree, along with neighbor pecan trees, provides us with plenty of shed limbs to have a constant supply of firewood. I cook over wood (in my grill) in the backyard often. We raise jalapenos and have a real appetite for poppers grilled over a wood fire.

Dang, now I’ve went and made myself hungry again.....

You made me hungry, too. When is dinner? (Don't I wish?)

Here in WV we have a "Road Kill" cook off contest. Like a box of Cracker Jack you never know what you are going to get. Suppose to be a big event but never have attended.
