OK. The throat plate I have is just a straight stitch. Mom is certain her "Singer" that did chain stitch was plain black and big like the Standard. I wonder if she got something that had been 'refurbished' or what but it wasn't converted from a treadle to electric - go figure. It was a treadle. She says she misses it. That was traded in for a Featherweight in 1948. LOL

I have not first hand experience with standards... or Spiders, but think og the singer 27's after the tension the thread goes through notch on the top corner of the face plate ... now obviously you don't have one other wise you would have seen it and used it....BUT would it be possible to bend a paper clip and stick it under the edge of the face plate... just to give it a try ?

Interesting about wrapping the thread all the way around the tension, instead of just through the bottom
Also interesting - wrapping the thread around the needle for the chainstitch.

Cathy my machine doesn't have the same threading as the one in the manual. The thread does not go all the way around the tension a second time - there is a small post in the way. My last patent date is October 1904 The chaining is looking better. All I did was loosen the foot pressure tension. I guess I'm not sure how tight the stitches should look.

Photo taken after some tension cleaning - yup it was BAD

I went and looked - yours is identical to mine, and the same as my Stout - so it's a more modern version than what is shown in my manual.
I have the manual that came with the Stout - and here are the pages for that one.
And though the head is the same, the bobbin area of the Stout is a bit different, and it takes a different style spider and bobbin case. However, the bobbins are the same for both.
