Happy to help! Enough people around here have helped me, so I'm just passing it on.

Sometimes the race wicks are just really dirty. You can wash them (swish them around in hot water and Dawn) or if they're fuzzy, brush off the end with an old toothbrush and put them in backwards from the way they came out, so the cleaner end is sticking out. Sometimes, though, they're beyond saving, and it's just easier to make new ones.

All of the 99s that I have have little to no wick left. I did find on the TFSR website a way to cut a new one so it would function the same as original, but didn't have that felt available and put it off. I will do as you suggested and they should be happier.

A neighbor who works at an auto place said to use the wick from a lantern as well, and gave me a "small" (about 6" long, a lifetime supply) wick to work with on Friday, but I wasn't sure if it would be OK. Since you're the 3rd person to say it would work, I may try that first. Otherwise, I have about a yard of red felt here, I should be able to make something that works out of that.

Equally important, here's how to get it back in:

    Thanks for that, Rain.

I think used the same basic reassembly procedure as you write about.

The disassembly, I basically stuck a tiny blade screwdriver under each clip, pried outwards, and then I could lift the race cover and the bobbin case straight out. Once I'd read over what TFSR (http://www.tfsr.org/publications/tec...achine_manual/) said, I understood what the bottom side of the hook looked like, and how to get it out without the polka that Singer suggests in their manual.
