I used 1/8' basswood for the base and balaster from a doll house. I get them at Hobby Lobby in the doll house section. Used my scroll saw to cut the slot for the thread. Then stained it. I used a small rubber gromet to hold it in place over the spool. Used a felt under the thing.

This is not hard to make just make sure you have a sharp drill bit and a steady hand. I f you don't have the means to cut the slot for the thread guide use a tiny drill and make a hole to thread the thing. I am talking about micro drill bits for the dremel.
