I've found myself feeling underneath desk tops, and even getting on my knees to see the underside of card tables. Wheeler Wilson had some cabinets that really did not look like they would house a sewing machine.

But this one, if it had the top on it and everything folded up, unless you get a good angle, you won't see those parts. The designers did a very good job making it so they hide well. I keep looking at the needlebar picture and it's very hard to tell it's a removable top, at least from the angle of the picture.

Now I'm on the hunt for the missing machine parts - I'll have to check and see if those from my other Davis machine will fit. It's missing both throat plates and the tension parts that are removable. Anything that would have been easy for little fingers to remove . . . Machine is in nice overall shape, but quite different than the Minnesota A on needlebar. I believe mine is a newer model.

Your "A" head is the old style that was discontinued around 1909 and replaced with the new "A" which had the round needlebar instead of rectangular, different decals and a more Singer 27 look. The "Capitol" slides might work on this thing due to narrow bed and I notice parts fairly often on ebay of people parting out Davis UF's. Don't think you'll have any troubles.

The problem is the Capital slides are too short, and the ones for the regular size Davis are too long. The base is a slightly different size than standard.

Interesting to know this is the earlier model, I would have expected it to be the later model. I was going more by the decals, not paying a hole lot of attention to things like square vs round needlebar, which would easily help decide which is older.

The biggest problem with getting parts for a Davis is that Davis rarely put their own name on the machines, so you end up looking at parts for the identifying items, and not caring about what "name" of the machine the seller says the parts came from.

I'll probably get slides and see if I can grind them down a bit to make them short enough. I don't care if they stick out a bit, just as long as they don't interfere with tipping the machine back.

This is a full sized Davis model L. These plates would probably work ground down and a light filing on the edges but you sort of roll the dice. I don't think Davis would want too many different sized plates to manufacture. I see Minnesota and other UF parts all the time, but like you said they need positive ID.

I'm hoping to find a good picture of the top - specifically how it gets held on. Rodney - I believe that is the later model machine. Does not appear they have the top cover either.

I'm not surprised. That big removable top is something that would part ways with the rest of the setup fairly quickly. It's big enough that I think a lot of people would just leave it off after a while. I wouldn't be surprised if over the years those tops were used to make other things too.

the seattle one looks like it has holes in the corners, it could could be dust specs in there photo. in zoom those don't show.

There been some very decent prices this along along I/5. I can fit 5 full cabinet treadles in my car/mini van gas hog. I could stop just south of Portland for the 25$ Jones treadle , head up to seattle for that one, and back around portland check on a few of the 40/50$ sales.

now if the paycheck came 5 days sooner.
