So, I actually replied to the Grasshopper ad, thinking legitimately that they had misplaced the decimal. Easy to do when typing. And I got the most HILARIOUS response. Is it even remotely kosher to post it here? Probably not. Sigh. Well, let's just say that the seller had it appraised and they know it is worth more than $1000 even without the chord "which cost like $20 bucks and we can get one".

I want to hire that appraiser - would help raise my net worth significantly! And then I could brag about the great investment I've made in vintage sewing machines!

I wonder if the appraiser was with his insurance company. There is a world of diff between actual value and the insurance replacement cost. Dealing with antique restoration and appraising of such items my customers always had a problem with this.

Well, an Elna Grasshopper isn't an antique, or even that rare of an item, and are routinely sold, with a power cord, for well under $500, so I would doubt that anyone would legitimately appraise one at $1000+.
Regardless of their claims, most folks would know that such an appraisal never took place.

I wanted to ask where he found a place that is able to sell them at that price - I got a bunch I'd like to offer them!

If you are going to ask 4-5 times what they are worth, at least drag them out so folks can see them. Maybe run a rag over them as well.
By the way, nice carpet.

I'd be willing to bet that the seller never sewed one stitch with this machine.
