What is the little door above motor for? (I see similar, sometimes ornate, on other machines.)

You are going to show us the rest of the machine, aren't you?

Well, if I do I will be found out that I may have posted a picture I should not have. I had the pic saved on my phone so I could enlarge to see more details and used that to ask.... here is the link on ebay for the machine. I was looking just to look and oogle at machines and got to wondering what the trap doors were for. It is a pretty machine, isn't it? I am on the prowl for a machine to convert to treadle but I want it to be zigzag so this one is out for me, but she sure is lovely (and I think pretty good starting bid, too....with no bidders! Yet. Buy it Now only 69.00) http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-Pink-Wo...item1c44739b53

The doors on top are for cams for various decorative stitches. The door you showed was an inspection/access door.
I know that others here have converted machines to treadle. They could probably tell you the best ones to look for.

The little door is where the tiny sewing leprechauns enter and exit to do what they do. Help form stitches and patterns, or turn your needle backwards, or trip the thread as it passes by, or misteriously make zig zag machines, not...
I know this, because I've seen their work

I always wondered about that - I sure do see the evidence but I've never caught them in the act.
Those Morse machines are very cool. I love the colors. Mine like that is BLUE. Wilbur says it is a boy machine.

My son was lucky enough to find a Singer 28 (I think Skip said that is what it is) at a yard sale, it is electric, but we have already figured out how to make a hand crank out of it. It has the hand wheel with the holes in it. I think that is what you have to watch for in your searches.

No JoAnn it is a 15, I think I told you wrong at the Toga sorry. Oops. It does have a spoked wheel so you can easily turn it into a hand crank.

I love hand cranking a Singer 15 - those old ladies sew anything!
