Always wanted to try something like this, making non-triangle triangles. It was a learning experience and how I did it at the beginning is not how I did it at the end. But I like it anyways!
    My own pattern, 15-1/4" x 15-1/4".

Wow is correct, that is great. I love the ships and that they are made out of HST. You did a outstanding design job.

Thanks, I'm so glad y'all like it!

It is only one Tall Ship in the picture, with lots of sails on its 3 masts. I know, it's very "prim," representational rather than accurate.

Yes, the squares are 1" finished.

No, no HSTs. There are no sewn triangles in the piece!

    You probably do know!

I believe it would fall into the category of some of the "folded fabric" techniques -

Every one of the 225 light and dark blue 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares is "background," finishing at 1".

Then the sails and the points on the bow and stern of the ship are additional 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares of red or white, laid face down on top of the proper background square, and folded over corner to corner.

When the background squares are joined, the folded pieces get caught as well, forming a 3D "pocket" looking like a triangle.

There are considerations of pressing the seams, because without some forethought, a lot of bulk can accummulate in spots. It was also a learning experience to get the folded bits to align correctly.

But by the time I got to the end of it all, I had a pretty workable system going.

And then the "bow waves" are prairie points set into the seams at the "waterline."

I think I'll try making something a bit larger with this method - I think larger pieces might be easier to join, and more forgiving of small discrepancies than the mini pieces are.

With your folded "triangles" and the small size, I'm astonished at your accuracy. Great job! I love the bow waves - what a great touch.
