On Simply Quilts Alex showed a Square In A Square Quilt.
It would be a great crib/lap quilt.
Make a square in a square block. (The square cut 6 1/2 inches, add the 1/2 square triangles) or whatever size you want to start with. Can be a bigger block.
After piecing the square in a square. Cut it in half horizontally and vertically, going through the points of the center square. Mix and match the pieces you have cut from all the blocks. Sew 4 assorted pieces together to make a new block.
Add a border.
Not sure if this is what you wanted but it is an easy quilt top.
