This is the way I do it to. It's easier to get the the correct size if I trim them especially the 7/8" cuts. I just go up to the next full inch. To me it's more timely but a better finish.
I agree. I used to trim to the SMALLEST square and just have smaller blocks. Then I learned to do the above and get much better results. This doesn't mean I don't ever have to "fudge" it. No perfection here.
