I think as long as you make it close to their preferred size, and do lots of quilting on the panel and sew the binding the way they want, you can use any kind of pattern and panel as long as you think a kid would like it.
I think that fabric's cute. Many of the kids I see that people have done have fabrics with bright colors on the black backgrounds.
