I recently ran into an acquaintance named Martha, whom I knew as an avid quilter and an almost rabid shopper, never being able to pass up a trip to a quilt shop. While looking at the newest line of quilter’s cottons, we happened to be standing next to a large window at the front of the store. Suddenly Martha glanced out the window, then put down the fabric bolts she was carrying, bowed her head, and stood quietly. Wondering what was going on, I looked out and saw a hearse drive by with a long procession of cars following. After they passed, I turned to Martha and said, “That must have been a highly respected person in town with all those people attending his funeral, and it was so nice of you to show such respect.” Martha smiled and said, “Why, yes, he was. He was the most loving and faithful husband a woman could ever want. We had our 50th anniversary just last week. It was the least I could do!”
