I use to it serge the raw edges of fabric before washing it - and for regular sewing.

I love the finished look of the seams. Takes away "that home-made look"

And there is no fraying of the seams.

Aside: My Mom always said there is a difference between "home-made" and "custom-made"

But one has to start learning somewhere, so keep on trying if this is something that interests you.
