I think the book mentioned stay stitching if doing the other style without the separators. Maybe that would help in your situation.
If stay stitching pulls the bias cut fabric askew while you're stitching, you might also try taping strips of 1/4" masking tape just barely into the seam allowance. It should stabilize everything and then be removed after you've sewn the separators on. If you decide to try that, be sure to test first to see that it will come off easily. I know that painter's tape is wonderful but I don't think you can buy it as narrow as 1/4" and masking tape might be a bit too sticky, but is available in 1/4" width.
