A cutting mat (self-healing and as large as you can afford),
a rotary cutter with a couple replacement blades,
a sewing machine, fabric, and at least a 6"x12" ruler, some thread and a pattern should be enough to get you started.
If you want to make a quilt, make one, just remember that "Quilt In A Day" is a name, not a reality--it will take longer. Pick a simple pattern and go for it.
