2.5 squares = 4.5" four patch ... would need strips 4.5" + 2.5" strip (to go around the four patch) = 7" strips ....
the pieces you would need for the beginning square and border strip would be <computer whirring> .... 9.5" ... finished block would be 8" (8.5" unfinished)
3" square = 5.5" four patch ... add 3" strips which would be 8.5" long ... for each of four colors in the block, you would cut strips 3" x 11.5" (sub-cut into two pieces one is three inches, the other is 8.5"... finished block would be 10" (10.5" unfinished)
3.5" square = 6.5" four patch ... so, you need to add 6.5 to 3.5 for the strips that equal ten inches (around the four patch) ... for each of the four colors in the block, you would cut strips that are 3" x 13.5" .... finished block would be 12" (12.5" unfinished)
