English paper piecing is a very old form of hand piecing blocks. You use a piece of paper that you used a templet to mark a shape, cut it out and then you either iron or baste the fabric onto the shape from the back side. Make tons of them! The pieces are then sewn together with tiny stitches along the edge to make a quilt. Grandmothers flower garden is one of them. It uses hexegons. I have even heard of the women leaving the paper in it for warmth.
