The foil does work. I keep it on my small rotary mat and slice through it several times. More if I am not satisfied with it yet. The small mat makes it easier to trash the shavings.
I have not been successful using my r/blade sharpener. It did come with directions (I mis-stated it didn't, sorry) but I have not been able to sharpen a blade.
