I do exactly what you do. At the front door the shoes come off and they only go on when I'm going out. Like someone else said, when our dog was still living if I came out with shoes on he got excited because he thought we were going walking or for a drive.

I may have learned this when I was a small child and lived in an immaculate home where my mom kept the hardwood floors so nice that you could almost see your face in them. As children we were trained to take our shoes off at the door and put them on a little rug next to the door and to this day I do that whether at my own home or someone elses. If I'm at other people's home, I make sure I have socks on as some people get grossed out by bare feet. I also usually ask if it's OK if I remove my shoes. I'm with you, NO SHOES works best for me.
