Well, the original idea was from a quilting show. The lady demonstrated how to sew each additional piece on the log cabin onto the first piece with the backing underneath, the batting in the middle, and you sewed the layers all at once. It was a royal pain in the butt! I kept tangling the batting, couldn't get the blocks straight, etc.

So, I switched methods and made just the top log cabin blocks normally, and then sandwiched all the layers and quilted them one block at a time. Now I have individual quilted squares that I can arrange and rearrange until I am happy.

If I do the diamond pattern, my next problem is what to do for the border. The diagonal pattern won't care what I use for an edge, it's going to look good anyway.
