So I got this idea to make my son a Christmas present, yes I think this far in advance, and got the block basically made on the computer (it's nice having a scanner)

I know in the pic the little side pieces aren't centered or the same size, but the real ones will be. My question is should I sew the printed pieces together and then topstitch black fabric on, or should I treat the black like another quilt piece? I have a set of those bias makers and really, the black that will show will be the same size, a half inch. The center golf print piece will be 6" square showing and the print is smaller in scale.
