Your quilt will be heavy and maybe you don't even need batting. Did you consider just adding flannel or fleece and skipping the batting? I used a plaid flannel (a fairly tight weave with little stretch) and just tied it. Batting just wasn't needed. I'm sure the men in your life will love this quilt.
