I always use a really tiny straight stitch, probably less than 1/16 of an inch away from the binding edge on the front of the quilt. They suggest using a zig zag stitch so there are no loose edges to get caught on things, but when stitching this close to the edge, there is no surplus fabric to get caught on anything.
