One can do the same thing with 5 inch (cut-size) squares -
(If these instructions are too sketchy/incomplete/vague for anyone, please send a PM to me and I will try to make them more understandable/clear)
These squares "finish size" to 4-1/2 (4.5) inches and that divides up fairly easily.
To make a four-patch, cut squares 2-3/4 x 2-3/4 inches.
(2.75 x 2.75) These "finish" to 2-1/4 (2.25) inches. (or cut strips 2-3/4 inches wide)
To make a nine-patch, cut squares 2 x 2 inches. These "finish" to 1-1/2 (1.5) inches. (or cut strips 2 inches wide)
To make alternate/plain blocks using the 5 inch cut squares as the show-off part:
Four 5-inch squares sewn together as a four patch equals 9-1/2 (9.5) inches. Cut a square that size. This finishes to 9 inches.
Nine 5-inch squares sewn together as a 9-patch block equals 14 inches. Cut a square that size. This finishes to 13-1/2 inches.
Sixteen 5-inch squares sewn together as a 16-patch block equals 18-1/2 inches. Cut a square that size. This finishes to 18 inches.
(Just think in divisions and multiples of 4.5 and add 1/2 inch)
